Grinding is not one pass; it is a sequence of diamond segments that step from coarse to fine, and getting the progression right is the whole craft. We start with a coarse metal-bond diamond sized to the job: aggressive enough to knock down high spots, tear off a coating, or open a hard-troweled surface, but not so aggressive that it leaves deep swirls the next steps cannot erase. From there each pass steps up to a finer segment, and the rule that separates a real prep from a rushed one is never skipping a step. Jump two grits and the coarse scratches telegraph straight through the finish, and on a polished floor that shows as a cloudy haze in the wrong light. We take the slab up through the sequence it needs for the finish that follows, checking the surface between passes rather than assuming the machine did its job. That discipline is invisible on the finished floor, which is exactly the point.

Grind a coating slab too smooth and the coating peels. Grind a polish slab too rough and you chase scratches for hours. How do I know what grit to start with for my floor?

Starting grit depends on the existing surface condition, what is on it, and what finish follows. A floor with a thick coating gets a coarser start (16 to 30 grit).
